December’s astrology gets off to an early start with the New Moon on November 30th, at 9°33’ Sagittarius. This lunation finds a much happier Moon than the dour environs of Scorpio. The first Decan of Sagittarius belongs to Mercury, and while the Moon is technically peregrine here (meaning she enjoys no essential dignity either major or minor) it is still a more congenial milieu than that dominated by Mars. The first hour or so may feel quite manic, as She glories in the freedom of a mutable Sign in a Decan ruled by the most mutable planet, but things will settle down a bit as she moves into the terms of Venus later in the day.
This New Moon also finds Her in an interesting position, opposing her Sign ruler and in his bounds. She is with Mercury, applying toward a conjunction with the retrograde trickster. This could lead to unique opportunities to expand your ability to create glamours that allow you to navigate tricky social spaces. Be mindful, however, about the limits of the illusions you weave, as the Moon is also in a square with Saturn, who in Pisces likes to cancel the more outlandish narratives and appearances we create about ourselves.
The journey of Venus in December might be one of the most interesting series of events this month. She will aspect almost every Planet between the 2nd and the 31st. Notably, She will be in a trine with Uranus, who is in Her own Sign of Taurus, from December 2nd until she begins applying to a square from Aquarius that perfects on the 27th. This movement from reconciliation to tension could portend a shift toward more open unrest in areas such as commerce and labor relations, as Venus transitions from Saturn’s more conservative sign to His more idealistic domicile.
On the 7th, Venus will conjunct Pluto in the first degree of Aquarius. This decan is associated with both idealism and it’s disillusionment. There are suggestions, again, of visible, prominent unrest, as Venus rules women as well as marginalized populations generally. It is likely that there will be a turning point in how those under Her dominion express themselves,or are allowed to express themselves.
December 12th, She will oppose retrograde Mars in Leo, as well as making a sextile with Mercury, just before the latter turns direct on the 15th. We may see attempts to walk back from previous statements of aggression or opposition. It is likely that the damage has already been done, however.
The Full Moon on the 15th sees Luna at the tail end of Gemini. She is applying to a square with Neptune, and the dreams of the months beginning now have to contend with the details of making them happen. There is a suggestion of simply slipping into fantasy and not bringing anything down to earth. It might be good to remember the lesson of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Mother Night” at this time: be careful who you pretend to be, because, in the end, you are who you pretend to be.”
On the 19th, Venus will trine retrograde Jupiter, still in his detriment in Gemini. The two make a lot of plans, but they will need to wait until later to ground them.
